TODAY’S MESSAGE

The invention of the lightbulb revolutionized the world and our way of life. No longer did darkness limit the ability to see or continue working. Light even changed the view of our globe from outer space. The Apostle John describes Jesus as the true light. No one has ever so revolutionized the world and our way of life like Jesus. No longer are we limited by our ability to see and understand God. Jesus lights our way. Understanding who he is and what he has done for us is the foundation of our Christian faith.

Jesus was there when God spoke into the darkness, “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:2). John reveals that Jesus wasn’t just present for the creation of the world, he was an active part of it. Jesus was the “word,” and through him, everything was made (John 1:1-3). Jesus is God-in-flesh (see Matthew 1:18-22)—a member of God’s Trinity sent by the Father and conceived by the Holy Spirit. Born as a baby, Jesus lived, died and was resurrected by God the Father’s power.

Not only was Jesus present at creation and on earth through his life, but he is also present with us now through his Spirit. John reminds us that Jesus is still a light shining in the darkness, not to be overcome (John 1:5). He still shines as the true light of God in our lives, no matter how dark and confusing the world around us becomes.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Spend some time thinking about who Jesus really is. Is he God to you or just a good man and wise teacher? Ask God to help you understand the importance of Jesus and all that God offers you through him. Journal a response to God in a notebook or on your mobile device. Thank God for sending Jesus to be our light.
