TODAY’S MESSAGE
Getting stretched is uncomfortable. Peter probably feels this when he shows up at Cornelius’ house. He never imagined responding to an invitation from a Gentile, even in his wildest dreams. This is so awkward and unexpected. Yet this is right where God wants him.
The situation feels so weird that Peter nervously announces, “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile” (Acts 10:28). As unexpected as this is, God is right there with him. In this surprising moment, Peter realizes God wants all people to know him, and finally understands he’s there to share Christ.
God wants to stretch us too. We can also find ourselves in awkward and unexpected situations—when a friend who has questions about Jesus invites us to meet them at a bar, but we don’t drink. Or the new neighbor we’re praying for fills their yard with political signs we disagree with. God may bring you to unexpected situations, but he is always right there with you (Matthew 28:19-20). IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY
Ask God to stretch your heart to match his by leaning in to engage in conversations with people different from you, even if it feels awkward or unexpected. Listen with an open heart, and be willing to be stretched. Expect the unexpected—and remember God already has a plan in motion and is with you.
