October 14 | The Followers (Be With)

October 14, 2020

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Jesus went up on a mountain and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. He appointed twelve that they might be with him… Mark 3:13-14a
Read: Mark 3:13-19

Listen: Mark 3

TODAY’S MESSAGE

It’s likely the twelve disciples had no idea all that was involved in following Jesus. By the time he calls them, they’ve seen him heal the sick and demonstrate authority over the demonic world. He’s forgiven sin and turned the religious world upside-down. But Jesus first calls them to simply ‘be with” him, an action word we probably boxed on page 31 of our journal. With him 24/7, they have to give up their own agendas. As they listen, watch and learn—they become more equipped to follow him.

Jesus is still looking for followers who will “be with” him— who listen to his teaching and watch both himself and the twelve to see what it means to expand God’s kingdom. As we watch him perform miracles and interact with those around, we learn from him. When we do, we have the opportunity to show the world what it means to follow Jesus.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Continue (or re-engage) in the reading program through Mark. If you’re new to the series, just jump in this week. You’re spending time “with” Jesus when you read the passage and mark your text. Take your time as you read each day. Slowly and thoughtfully meditating on his Word is a great way to “be with” Jesus as you ask him to shape and mold you.
