Beyond the Weekend

October 30 | The Daughter

October 30, 2020

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?” Overhearing what they said, Jesus told [Jairus], “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” Mark 5:35b-36

Read: Mark 5:21-43

Listen: Mark 5

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Jairus, a synagogue leader, asks Jesus to heal his sick daughter. But Jesus stops to speak with the woman who touched him, and Jairus’ daughter dies within that time. What Jesus says to Jairus is surprising and unexpected, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

Fear is a natural response to death because it’s so final. But Jesus shows Jairus, by taking his daughter’s hand and raising her from death, it doesn’t have to be. In a similar situation in John’s Gospel, Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die…Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26).

Mark inspires us to ask, “Who is Jesus, and what does it mean to follow him?” Consider what you have learned this week and write your response in your journal. One response is that Jesus is God-in-the-flesh who died on the cross in our place to pay the debt of our sins. When we repent and accept that gift, we will live forever in his heavenly Kingdom. As Jesus asks, “Do you believe this?”

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

If you believe but have never told God you accept Jesus’ gift you can do so by praying, “Thank you Jesus for dying on the cross in my place. I accept this wonderful gift and want to follow you as my leader.” If you pray this prayer, record it on page 50 of your journal and contact us at btw@adabible.org so we can encourage you. Thank God for his gift of salvation as you listen to our worship team sing, “Oh Praise the Name.”
