TODAY’S MESSAGE

The last day of 2020 is an excellent time to reflect on the way we use our words. According to Proverbs 12:18, our words can pierce like swords, or they can bring healing. If we are honest, it doesn’t take long to think of times where words have pierced us like swords. Each of us also quickly can think of times when words have brought healing to us too.

Pastor Kevin Harney spoke this past weekend about how our words can either burn or build. They can burn others when we use negative comments, gossip, complain or use harsh words towards those around us. In 2021, we can make a shift to stop burning those around us with our words. Pastor Kevin suggested that one tool is to ask ourselves before speaking, “Will this edify or build?” If the answer is no, then it might not be worth saying.

We might not be burning with our words, but we might not really be building either. Sometimes we withhold words that could bless or encourage others. We have the opportunity to build up our spouses, friends, children, co-workers, teachers or coaches each day. Our kind, encouraging words can be incredibly powerful in the lives of those around us.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Start 2021 strategically and daily using our words to build others up. Pick one person whom you can focus on building up. It might be a spouse, friend, child, family member, coach, teacher or co-worker. Identify one way you can build them up with your words today. If this is a shift you would like to grow in this year, consider listening to a past series with Pastors Jeff Manion and Aaron Buer called “The Power of Words.”
