TODAY’S MESSAGE

In this section of the Proverbs, we read some things that King Solomon thought were important for his sons to know. Among the topics are the importance of wisdom (Proverbs 4:5-6), avoiding those who do evil (Proverbs 4:14) and the value of right living (Proverbs 4:18). He also tells them to “guard your heart.” He does this because he knows that everything they do has its beginning in the heart. Whatever is going on inside will spill out.

This is true with coveting. Coveting begins in the heart. When it spills, it results in more than just breaking Commandment 10. We often think through and consider breaking many others too. When an Israelite covets his neighbor’s oxen, he considers breaking #8 (you shall not steal). When King David covets his neighbor’s wife, he goes on to break #7 (you shall not commit adultery) and ultimately #6 (you shall not murder). When King Ahab covets Naboth’s vineyard, he breaks #6 and#8.

Coveting will always involve more than just what we think. What goes in our heart will spill out into what we do. It’s why Solomon warns us to guard our heart.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

How’s your heart? If you’ve identified an area in which you are moving towards coveteousness, take a step towards guarding your heart. This could include speaking with your small group leader or a trusted Christian friend. If you need help, we would love to have a conversation with you. Email us at btw@adabible.org.
