TODAY’S MESSAGE

This week’s passage reads like a science fiction movie with good actors, special effects and a willing audience to buy into things that could never happen. But it did happen—and for a very good reason. Almighty God, who created the cosmos, wants to be known. He authenticates Paul’s message of salvation through Jesus by providing miracles to people in Ephesus who need supernatural signs to believe. The healings, demon beatings and scroll burning all spread the name of Jesus and help Gentile people in the area understand that God is real and wants to be known.

The supernatural events in Ephesus also help new Jesus-followers realize they don’t need to hang on to old beliefs as a backup plan. God dramatically draws their trust so they can confess, experience his forgiveness and publicly burn their sorcery scrolls.

Many of us want what Jesus offers, but we hang on to old beliefs and habits. This passage teaches God wants us to believe in his supernatural power, honor his name, put him in the center of our lives, hide nothing from him and make an intentional effort to know him.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Take some time to look back through your journal and take note of what you have learned about God. Ask him to reveal where you are holding back and to help you know him better. Commit to letting go of old beliefs and habits to follow him fully.
