TODAY’S MESSAGE

When we think about Paul’s time in Ephesus, we probably imagine that everything came easily for Paul. God swings doors open wide, the gospel spreads rapidly, lives change quickly and Paul sees non-stop success in the city. God indeed blesses Paul’s ministry in Ephesus in incredible ways, but Paul faces nearly constant difficulty and opposition while he is there. In fact, while in Ephesus, Paul wrote a letter to a church in Corinth and included today’s verse. Paul seems to be saying “It’s really good, but it’s really hard.”

Pastor Jeff Manion reminds us that some of the most rewarding and fulfilling roles in life will also have moments where they are deeply challenging. Marriage is a beautiful gift from God, and one of the most rewarding relationships. At the same time, it is really hard and one of the most challenging relationships. Parenting often consists of great joy, but is difficult and heartbreaking. Ministering to others in any capacity can be really fulfilling, and but also really hard. Some of our greatest opportunities might be hidden in these challenging times.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Write out “Opportunity and Opposition” on pages 49-50 in your Jesus & The City journal. Then write about the rewarding roles God has placed you in and the challenges you face. End with a prayer that God would give you strength to move into these opportunities.
