So early in the morning Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on top of it. He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first. Genesis 28:18-19
Jacob wakes up the following day and knows this was more than just a dream. He thinks he’s happened upon a doorway, a sacred and special place where heaven and earth meet. So, Jacob stands a stone as a pillar to mark the spot and pours oil on it. He is running for his life and can’t build an altar or temple to God but marks this spot and promises to return.
Jacob returns to this spot over 20 years later. He experiences a lot in those two decades, but God is with him all along the way. In this second visit, there is no question that God is Jacob’s God and not just the God of his father or grandfather. And this spot was the place where God met him when he was alone and afraid (Genesis 35:3).
Watch this video clip as Pastor Jeff reminds us God wants to meet us in the space where we feel alone and afraid. We can invite God to meet us here. We can ask the same God who recruited a con man to be a part of his renewal program to use us too. The place where we are alone and afraid might just become the space where the God of Abraham becomes our God.
