TODAY’S MESSAGE

Joshua calls the people to choose between a trustworthy God or the gods of the nations around them. There’s another story in the Bible where something similar happens. The crowds following Jesus grow. They’re interested in what he’s saying but are also there for the miracles. Most leave when Jesus begins to share who he is and what it means to follow him. Jesus turns to his closest disciples and asks, “You do not want to leave too, do you?” (John 6:67). Peter’s response is one of the most beautiful lines in the Bible, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68).

Peter’s response is an example for us. We can return to what Peter said each time we’re confronted with the choice of trusting God or not. We focused this week on God’s reliability, the choice we have to make and the unreliability of substitute gods. When we remind ourselves that God is trustworthy and reliable, there are no other good options. Peter was right—there’s nowhere else to go. God is the only way to genuine life now and forever.
