TODAY’S MESSAGE

Paul warns church leaders to keep watch for the things they can see and invisible forces working against Jesus and his followers. The most prevalent of these is the devil. The Bible teaches the devil is very real and regularly referred to by Jesus who describes him as “not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44c). He hates God and wants to destroy what God loves—us!

The devil is a formidable foe. He focuses on our vulnerabilities to draw us away from trusting God. Paul warns church leaders to watch over both themselves and all the flock (others in the church). Part of this process is helping Jesus-followers learn to keep watch over themselves. Pastor Aaron Buer encouraged us last weekend to know and be alert to our weaknesses because that’s where we’re the most vulnerable to attack. Then, we need to set a watch over that area of weakness. Reach out to a Christian friend, join a small group or find a mentor for their support and prayer. These are essential safeguards to grow and protect our faith.
