TODAY’S MESSAGE

Jesus is now just three days away from his crucifixion. He returns to the temple after driving out the money changers and those selling doves, and tensions are high. Jerusalem’s religious leaders are convinced they need to do something about Jesus. They have to find a way to deal with Jesus to avoid masses of people going over to him. They have two options: (1) kill him or (2) discredit him to the point where the crowds leave. Hoping to set a trap, they ask him three questions.

The three questions deal with the issue of loyalty. In dramatically different ways, they raise the topic of loyalty to God and his rule over us. All three questions are about God’s ownership and our responses to his authority over us. Those in opposition to Jesus ask questions about a tax, the resurrection and the greatest commandment. In his answers are reasons why we should yield ourselves to God.

God’s authority touches every part of our lives. Every thought we have, action we take and response we plan shows the extent of our loyalty to him. It’s as if no one will ever need to ask us about our loyalty to Jesus. All they’ll need to do is look at how we live.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Continue to follow Mark’s example in his gospel by slowing down to take in all that is happening. As you do, offer a prayer of yielding to God as you begin your week. “Father, show me where I need to be more attentive to your authority in my life. Through your Spirit, help me yield to your good and wise word. Amen.”
