March 15 | Fear

March 15, 2022

They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ But if we say, ‘Of human origin’ …” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.” Mark 11:31-32

Mark 11

Fear seems to be a driving factor in how these religious leaders treat Jesus. They have a lot to be afraid of too. As elites in the city of Jerusalem, the chief priests are concerned about losing their position, prestige and influence. They are scared of the people because they rallied behind John the Baptist. If they announce John as a fraud, they will have a riot on their hands. Rioting leads to the Romans cracking down and taking the religious elites’ power.

We also can be afraid of losing things. We fear if we really follow God and accept Jesus’s authority in our life, we might lose or have to give up a relationship, reputation, image, career or something we crave. These fears keep us from allowing Jesus to call the shots in our life.

Our fears can look different for each of us, but trust is the solution to the fear about going all-in with God. Even when we are afraid, we can trust God. Trust God to work in the fear, in the potential loss and in us to get us through. God is faithful time and again, and his ways are better than we can imagine. This doesn’t mean that everything will be perfect, but it does mean God will be there for us no matter what.

Pray this simple prayer today and as often as you need, “God I am afraid. Help me to trust you.” Then listen to the song, “Goodness of God.” May these words be a reminder for you of the goodness of God. Believe he has been faithful to you and can be trusted with your fears.
