TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

The Law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the LORD are firm, and all of them are righteous. Psalm 19:7-9

TODAY’S MESSAGE

The Bible is a unique book. It’s really a library of 66 books of different types. Yet, all 66 books tell one cohesive story about the God of the universe and his deep love for this world. Pastor Aaron Buer last week preached on this cohesive story. Watch it here at adabible.org/series/the-bible.

When we pick out a book, we typically pick out a specific type of book for a specific purpose. We read an Ikea instruction manual differently than a novel, a WWII historical account differently than Maya Angelou’s poetry, and a news article differently than a cookbook. We read them differently because they are written differently.

We have to admit that sometimes we read Bible passages like a recipe from a cookbook. We pull something out and use it one time. However, we can truly understand God and the Bible when we truly understand the different writing types (genres). “What genre is this?” is a great question to ask. Sometimes it might be obvious like narrative, poetry or discourse. If it’s not, there are many Bibles and Bible apps with introductions or notes to explain the author, audience, genre and purpose. These resources help us understand God, his words and what it means for us today.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Read an introduction to the Bible or book of the Bible. If you have a physical copy of the Bible, check the table of contents for an introduction. The introduction to the Bible often gives insight into how to read the Bible well. If you don’t have a physical copy, find Bible introductions online or in a Bible App. For instance, here is one introduction to the Book of Genesis from Bible.com.
