TODAY’S MESSAGE
Hebrews 1 emphasizes that God spoke in various ways and at various times. God speaks to people through different literature genres (writing types). The Bible includes history, poetry, biography, letters and commands.
Pastor Jeff Manion explains God speaks differently through each genre. Narrative tells about how God created the world, the unique place of humankind in it and his relationship with Abraham and his decedents. Poetry expresses deep emotions associated with being human and choosing to follow God. Old Testament commands demonstrate God’s holiness and character. New Testament discourse helps us understand more about Jesus, and how to live in light of his life and sacrifice for us.
The fact that the Bible is a library of different genres isn’t just a detail scholars discuss or fun trivia to know. It’s a beautiful picture of how God longs to communicate to us in various ways for us to understand and relate to. Not only did our God speak—but in specific ways, for us to relate and find meaning with him.
