May 16 | Doubt and the Bible

May 16, 2022

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught. Luke 1:3b-4

Read: Luke 1:1-4
Listen:
Luke 1

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Luke records an account of the life of Jesus and wants his recipient to know why he writes. Luke desires to give Theophilus (and all others who read it) a precise, accurate and complete understanding of the Gospel and the life of Christ. As the message of Jesus spreads through the Roman Empire, questions arise about who Jesus was and what he did. Jesus followers need trustworthy answers for their very real questions. Doubts are starting to creep in, and they want to know their faith stands on solid ground.

Doubt is nothing new. It still challenges us when we read an article questioning a vital claim of Christianity. Doubts can surface when a friend asks a question, and we don’t know the answer. We may face doubt when a documentary allegedly debunks a significant event in biblical history. Doubts can slam into our faith from many directions.

We may face various types of doubt throughout our lives. It might be doubt about the facts in the Bible. We may doubt because we want to live differently than how God directs. Maybe we struggle when God calls us to a deeper level of trust. Doubt can seem like it is always just around the corner, but it doesn’t have to shake our faith. This week we’ll see that Christ and his Word are far more trustworthy than anything we are trusting.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Pray a prayer similar to this one and bring all of your doubts to your loving Heavenly Father, “Gracious God, it seems like doubts surround me. Help me see that none of these catch you by surprise and that you have a trustworthy answer for each one. Help me trust you even more when doubts come. Thank you, Father. Amen.”
