TODAY’S MESSAGE

Reality dawns on the disciples that Jesus has actually risen from the dead. As they discuss what they heard from two disciples who encountered Jesus on the road to Emmaus, he miraculously appears in the room! Jesus speaks, shows them his hands and feet and asks for something to eat. He then takes them on a “tour” of the Old Testament. Using the three major sections of the Hebrew Scriptures, Jesus helps them understand what the Old Testament says about him is true.

It’s important to know the Old Testament is true. Some who read the Bible might say, “You can verify everything about Jesus: his life, healings, death, and even resurrection. But you can’t prove what happened in the Old Testament.” Indeed, we don’t have the same historical evidence for the Old Testament as for the New. However, we have Jesus’s words accepting every part of the Old Testament as true. His fulfillment of what the Old Testament says proves its truth.

The Old Testament is solid, true and can be trusted. We can have confidence in it and ignoring it is to our detriment. God’s work of redemption through the nation of Israel has much to teach us about “a godly life through our knowledge of him” (2 Peter 1:3).
