TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. John 13:14-15

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Jesus sits down for one last meal with the disciples. Before the meal begins, Jesus washes his disciples’ feet. It is a dirty, disgusting job and one that signifies weakness. Jesus wants his disciples to understand that the way of Jesus means humility and service, not power and prestige.
Although these disciples didn’t seem to get the message that night, it came to define their character as they built the church. The New Testament writings were not about power, prestige or control. Most other ancient texts come from the political elite. This often leaves historians skeptical about how much to trust these sources. However, the Bible is different. Most of the Old Testament and all of the New Testament were written by those without power. It came from the lowly, for the lowly and was copied by the lowly.
Knowing this leaves us grateful that God cares about the lowly and causes us to seek ways to follow Jesus’s example of humility and service. There are many ways to do this. We can lift someone up through an encouraging note, letter or word. We can financially support someone in need or purchase a Bible for someone exploring Christianity. Or maybe we sign up to serve at our church in children’s ministry or hospitality.
IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY
Think about those in your life and how you can humbly serve them like Jesus. Write out ways you can serve others and make a plan to do one of those this weekend.
