TODAY’S MESSAGE
Questions are a vital part of life. A friend who never asks any questions wouldn’t be a good friend. Questions help us learn and grow. In first-century Israel, the whole religious education system was built on asking good questions. All good teachers, known as rabbis, taught using questions. Asking questions—even deep and difficult ones—was the sign of someone who understands, thinks critically and makes connections. Jesus was a master teacher. Scholars say he asked 307 questions!
This week we look at what is possibly the first question that Jesus asks as an adult in the gospels. Jesus is rounding up his crew—beginning to gather the disciples he will train to carry on his mission. Jesus’s interactions with his first few disciples help us see that Jesus questions us, names us and knows us.
Jesus invites Philip, Nathanael, Peter and John to travel with and learn from him. It’s an invitation he offers to us today through the church. As a church community, we journey together to become more like Jesus. We encourage each other to come and see what Jesus is all about and how we can grow to be that way too.
