TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip. John 1:45-46

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Twice in this week’s story, we read a similar statement, “come and see.” The first is when the disciples inquire about Jesus. He tells them to come and see. They will spend the next three years walking with Jesus to learn the way of God. The second time we see the phrase is when Philip invites Nathanael to join him in following Jesus. It’s invitational. Philip believes he has found the Messiah, and he wants Nathanael to meet him too.
In many ways, this simple phrase encapsulates much of the Christian life. The Christian life is about coming to Jesus and seeing the true life he offers.

It’s about knowing Jesus and living the way we’re created to live. But then there’s a second way it epitomizes the Christian life. The phrase is a key part of what it looks like to show others the love of Jesus. As Christians, we represent Jesus to the world around us. “Come and see” is the power of a simple invitation. Just like Philip asks Nathanael to come and see Jesus, we too can invite others to experience Jesus, whether it is a co-worker, friend, family member or neighbor.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Think through your social circles. There is likely someone in your life who needs to be asked to “come and see.” Ask God to allow you to share what Jesus is doing in your life, invite them to your small group, ask them if they’d like to read through part of the Bible with you or see if they want to join you at church this summer.

The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
