TODAY’S MESSAGE

Jesus is still in Jerusalem when he and his disciples see a man blind from birth. The disciples ask him a question about the cause of this man’s blindness. They want to know whose sin is responsible for this man’s disability—the man himself or his parents. Jesus answers this question and ultimately heals the man as he turns the question upside down. In doing so, he challenges the religious leaders offended by the healing and gives an important lesson to the disciples.

We see Jesus speak to both the religious leaders and his disciples as the man moves from physical and spiritual blindness to sight. He again confronts the religious leaders, who remain stuck in the spiritual blindness. He also wants to teach the disciples something significant. While they want to see—they are struggling to see. Jesus is trying to help them understand what spiritual sight means.

This man’s story this week shows us that the questions we ask during confusing and difficult times matter. They matter for our spiritual growth, and they matter to God. The questions we have when we’re struggling are important as we move from spiritual blindness to spiritual sight.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Consider which of the three characters in this story you are most like. You might be like the blind man coming to know Jesus. You could be like the disciples trying to figure out what it really means to follow Jesus. Or you might be like the religious leaders looking for reasons not to follow Jesus. Regardless of where you land—remain open to all the Spirit wants to teach you in this story.
