TODAY’S MESSAGE

There’s a problem in the 6th century BC. The Babylonians are the major power and have their eyes set on controlling the world. The kingdom of David and Solomon split long ago into two kingdoms: Israel and Judah. Israel was crushed by the previous world power, the Assyrians. Babylon has its eyes set on Judah. God speaks through the prophet Jeremiah to tell the people of Judah how judgment is coming. The people have been rebelling against God for years. They’ve worshiped the gods from the surrounding culture. The rulers have been oppressing the poor. It’s a dire situation.

Yet, Jeremiah also tells the people that God won’t give up on them. God still loves them and will restore them. It’s a similar message to what we heard this weekend. In our July memory verse, God tells the people that their relationship will be about their character and not just their actions. God tells them he will write the law on their hearts and minds. It’s about who they will be as a person and people, not about following a set of rules. It’s one of the primary themes of Jesus’s teaching and at the core of what it means to follow Jesus.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Recommit to memorizing a verse of the Bible each month for the remainder of the year. We’re over halfway through our memory verses for the year. As we begin the second half of the year, this month’s verse helps us remember why we memorize the Bible. It’s about getting the very words of God into our hearts to develop the character of Jesus in us. Begin to work on memorizing Jeremiah 31:33 today.
