TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” John 21:16

Read: John 21:15-17

John 21

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Consider what it would’ve been like to be Peter in this story. He messed up. It’s bad. The night before Jesus died, Peter belligerently says he’ll even follow Jesus to death. Jesus predicts Peter would deny him before the rooster crowed, and that’s exactly what happened. It breaks Peter when he realizes what he’s done, and the Bible says he “wept bitterly” (Matthew 26:75).

Now, here’s Jesus serving them breakfast (John 21:1-17). Turning to Peter, he does the unthinkable. He restores Peter. But that’s not it. In the midst of the restoration, Jesus also calls Peter to action. Three times (one time for each denial) Jesus declares his love and forgiveness by calling Peter back on the team to “feed his sheep.” He says, “I have a job for you to do. We are still friends, and I need you.”

God says something like this to us too. Like Peter, he asks us to put our relationship with God into action. He’s given us a mission. Throughout the New Testament, we see the early believers challenged to physically and spiritually serve one another. We can serve a young parent by teaching their child about Jesus in children’s ministry. We can encourage a teenager in their walk with Jesus by serving in Lifeline. We can lead conversations that help people see how God’s word applies to their lives as an adult small group leader. We can provide a warm welcome for someone coming to church the first time as part of the hospitality team. Serving each other is part of what it means to follow Jesus.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Consider how, like Peter, God is calling you to take some action. It could be something you’ve stopped doing or maybe something you need to start doing for the first time. There are many great opportunities to serve each other both spiritually and physically at Ada Bible. Take action to serve in one of our ministries. Details at adabible.info>serve.

JEREMIAH 31:33

“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.”
