Matthew 6

TODAY’S MESSAGE

After telling the crowd to notice the birds, Jesus has them look at the wildflowers covering the hillside. He tells them that if God provides such beauty and splendor as he “clothes” the flowers, how much more will he provide clothing for them? Jesus follows this promise by describing the crowd as “you of little faith.” It seems like a weird way to categorize the multitudes hearing him speak.

Jesus uses this phrase many times. He says it to describe the disciples when they’re caught in a storm on the Sea of Galilee (Matthew 8:23-27). With Peter as Jesus is walking on water (Matthew 14:22-36). Again to the disciples following the feeding of the 4,000 (Matthew 16:5-12) and when they are unable to cast out a demon (Matthew 17:14-20). By continually calling attention to their lack of faith, Jesus was building their trust in him. He wants them to remember what he has done in the past tells them he can be trusted to meet their needs today. It isn’t all on them.

It strengthens our faith too when we remember how God has brought us through challenges and struggles. We can look back at his provision of a job, the strength he provided during a difficult season and the friend you met at just the right time. Through his Spirit, God is with us no matter what we face. It isn’t all on us.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Reflect on those times when God has met you during a difficult season in your life. Journal a list of those times and the way God met your need. One example might be, “I remember our season of unemployment and how we never missed a meal.” Use this activity to make your faith stronger today.
