TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. John 6:66-67

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Early in Jesus’s ministry, many of his followers walk away right after he performs an astounding miracle. A great multitude (over 5,000 men, women and children) chases him across the Sea of Galilee. Word of his healings compels them to follow far into the wilderness where there’s no food. So Jesus feeds them with five loaves of bread and two fish. The next day, looking for more food and clarification on his identity, they track him back to the synagogue in Capernaum where he’s teaching. The conversation doesn’t go well.

The crowd looks for what they want, not what Jesus wants to give them. His answers to their questions offend them, so they walk away. They get one great meal and then leave, never understanding Jesus wants to feed them for eternity. It’s heart-breaking. Seeing them go, Jesus asks his twelve disciples, “Do you want to leave too?”

There may come a time when we, too, consider walking away because of what Jesus says. This week we will look at the hope and certainty Jesus offers in the face of our doubts and disappointments.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

With humility and honesty, ask God for help to not walk away from him. “Father, I recognize doubts and disappointments may tempt me to walk away from you and your church. When that happens, may your Holy Spirit help me remember what you have done for me and truths from your Word that will sustain me. Please provide other believers who will love and support me. Amen.”

JEREMIAH 31:33

“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.”
