TODAY’S MESSAGE

Everybody wants something. The multitude of Jews whom Jesus miraculously feeds in the wilderness want more, so they chase him down and ask for a sign. The food miracle encourages them to ask if Jesus is the next Moses (John 6:14). Moses rescued their nation from slavery in Egypt. It’s looking good that Jesus might be the second Moses who will now rescue them from Roman occupation and re-establish the Kingdom of Israel. The bottom line is that’s what they want.

We also want things from Jesus. We often initially seek him because of an urgent need. Maybe we’re lonely and looking for a spouse, feel like we’re getting nowhere in our career, or are simply at the end of our rope. It’s okay to come to Jesus with our desires. But what if he has more to offer than we’re looking for?

Seeking what we want from Jesus isn’t a bad thing because that’s what draws us to him. But he doesn’t always give us exactly what we want. We need to be willing to allow him to reshape our wants and desires to match what he wants to offer. Unfortunately, the multitude of Jews is not open to finding out what Jesus wants to offer. Instead, they walk away.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

In your journal or mobile device, list what you desire from God. Prayerfully give him each desire to shape into what he wants for you.

JEREMIAH 31:33

“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.”
