TODAY’S MESSAGE

Jesus meets his two followers on the road. While hiding his identity from them, he unpacks how the Bible is about him. While we don’t have the details of what he said, Luke writes that Jesus starts with Moses and the prophets. It means Jesus unpacks what we know as the Old Testament. Right after humans rebel against God, God says that a man (Jesus) will crush the head of the serpent. Then, a few chapters later in Genesis, God makes a promise to Abraham. He tells Abraham that all the world will be blessed through his descendants, who become the people of Israel. Jesus was one of Abraham’s descendants. This promise is then carried forward, and we see God promising the Israelite King David that one of his descendants would reign forever. Jesus came from the family of David. These are merely some of the promises we find in the Old Testament. There are many more that point toward Jesus.

It’s exciting to think what it must’ve been like to be on the road to Emmaus with Jesus. To hear him unpack how the Old Testament points to him. It could be easy to lament that we don’t have an opportunity like that today. But, we have the Bible. We also have tools like a Study Bible. We can read the Old Testament and see how it points to Jesus. So much information is available to understand how the Bible tells one big story. It’s the story of God’s rescue. It’s the story of how Jesus would suffer, die on the cross and rise again. It’s the story of how his followers then preached the good news of Jesus around the world, calling people to repent and be forgiven of their sins.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Thank God for his rescue plan. Thank him for the Bible and how we can learn more about who God is and what his love looks like. Thank God for suffering on the cross to save us from our sins. Thank him for including you in his plan to share the good news with those around you.
