TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Just as a nursing mother cares for her children, so we cared for you. 1 Thessalonians 2:7b-8a

Read: 1 Thessalonians 2:7-10
Listen:
1 Thessalonians 2

TODAY’S MESSAGE

A mother nursing her baby conjures images of deep love and life-giving care. It’s an image God often uses for himself to describe his love. God tells Israel, “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you” (Isaiah 66:13). Like a nursing mother, God doesn’t forget them and responds when they cry out (Isaiah 49:15). God cares for his children in a way that’s intimately knowing and committed.

When Paul compares himself to a nursing mother, he’s referring to God’s deep love and care. The Thessalonian Christians are brand new believers who need care and nurturing to grow. Paul tenderly offers them his personal love and attention.

The image of a nursing mother sounds gender specific, but the meaning behind it is for all believers. When we accept Jesus, the Holy Spirit empowers us to love others in ways we could never pull off on our own. Paul shows us we need to both share God’s words and give our care to help each other move forward in our faith. Everybody needs to look out for somebody.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY
