August 24 | Overcoming Inferiority

August 24, 2022

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 1 Corinthians 12:15

1 Corinthians 12

TODAY’S MESSAGE

In Corinthian culture, one could quickly feel inferior if lacking status. The ones born into slavery or to a no-name family may feel like they don’t matter. Those who came from backwater towns or conquered lands could feel less than those born in great cities and raised with social connections. Paul reminds believers who feel like “they’re less than” that in Christ’s body, they matter and belong. God values each one and desires to use them and their gifts to love, serve and grow his body.

It can be easy for us to feel like we don’t belong or matter in Christ’s body too. We see a gifted Bible teacher or musician and think we don’t have a part to play because we can’t do “that.” Or maybe we know a friend who easily turns conversations about lawncare and the weather into conversations about Jesus, and we think we have nothing to offer. Others welcome people into their homes like they’ve always been family, and we wonder if we belong in the body.

The truth is God has each of us here for a reason, and we need each other. God desires we share our gifts and lives with others. No part is insignificant. Just as a physical body needs all the visible and hidden parts, the same is true for Christ’s body.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Share with a trusted friend or family member about where you feel inferior. Ask them to help you remember your value to Jesus and that you have a part to play in his body. Then ask God to help you know your next step to help build his body.
