TODAY’S MESSAGE

Paul addresses those in the Corinthian church who look down on others. Their culture’s values of position, power and prestige seep into their Jesus community. Some in the church think their status means they matter, and others don’t. They lack the understanding that in Jesus, they form one body where the parts need each other and are equally valuable.

We, too, can easily let culture sway us into believing that some people are more important than others, influencing how we treat each other. Instead, Jesus desires us to treat others the way we want to be treated (see Luke 6:31). In his family, people love and honor each other in ways the world can’t understand. We value people because of who God says they are—created in his image and worth dying for—not because of what they do or know. We recognize each member of the body is an integral part of what God is doing in the world and that we can learn and grow together.

One way we reject superiority and grow to value those we may struggle with is by sharing their joy and grief (Romans 12:15) When a physical body part suffers, the whole body suffers, which should be the same for the church body. When one in our body has health issues, marriage struggles, deep loss or disappointment—we enter their pain. The same for shared joy. When one celebrates a long-awaited job offer, cancer remission or childbirth—we share their joys. This connection and love among people with vastly differing gifts, opinions, backgrounds and experiences show the world the beauty of belonging to Jesus.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY
