August 29, 2022

Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given to wear. (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.) Revelation 19:7-8

In our series THE CHURCH, we learn that the church is much more than a building. We looked at the church as a family and as a body the previous two weeks. We talk about the church as a bride this week. The picture of the church as a bride can bring up some negative emotions. Yet through this picture, God is giving us a glimpse of his purpose for the church and our role in it.

For some of us, the idea of a bride comes with some baggage, hurt or pain. Maybe our parents had a messy relationship, so we view marriage negatively. Perhaps our own difficult relationship leaves us with unmet expectations and desires. Others might wish for marriage, and it is a painful reminder to talk about being a bride.

With all of these feelings, the truth is God describes the church in this way. The Bible tells us God offers us hope, comfort and challenge as the bride of Christ. The church is loved by God, devoted to Jesus and beautiful as a bride. May we be open to learning from this picture of the church as the bride of Christ this week.

Spend some time thinking about how the church as the bride of Christ makes you feel. What comes to mind as you think of the church as the bride of Christ? Talk to God about it and ask him to teach you about his church. Ask him to help you understand the church better this week.
