TODAY’S MESSAGE

The experience of being wronged or in a disagreement can quickly lead to anger. When it does, we have a decision to make. We can decide to respond in a God-honoring way or hold on to the anger and allow it to grow. We replay the situation over and over in our minds. We assign the worst motives to those who hurt us as we plan revenge and retaliation. The irritation festers as we nurse and coddle it. Often, it goes underground only to erupt in an unexpected way.

Recognizing this danger, the Apostle Paul instructs us to deal with it today. If we don’t, and we allow anger to simmer over an extended period, we leave an opening that further damage our relationships. We can “harbor resentment.” If we harbor resentment, work environments can become toxic, marriages frayed and friendships lost. Paul’s direction is to respond sooner rather than later and with grace rather than anger. When we do, we control anger instead of letting it control us.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Responding well to the temptation of sinful anger is a skill we need to learn. It’s something we’ll continually need as we move through life. To help us respond well, watch this video featuring Pastor Aaron Buer and counselor Mario Franciscotty on the topic of anger.

JAMES 1:19–20
My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
