September 23 | An End to Sadness

September 23, 2022

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:4

Read: Revelation 21:1-5
Listen:
Revelation 21

TODAY’S MESSAGE

The book of Revelation paints a picture of what will happen in the future. It’s a type of literature often called apocalyptic prophecy. It uses vivid imagery to convey a message. It’s written by one of Jesus’s disciples, John. God gives John this apocalyptic vision of the future for him to share with the early Jesus-followers who are undergoing persecution. It gives them hope that their future is secure. It helps them see that there will be an end to their sadness as Jesus is victorious over death and suffering. They can have confidence that Jesus “will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain” (Revelation 21:4).

As we walk through life, we may face different kinds of sadness. There is sadness that is seasonal. It passes over time. There are also kinds of sadness that stick with us throughout our life. This is the sadness caused by something like the death of a loved one or a lingering physical injury. While this sadness might not dominate our entire life, it is always there. Revelation speaks to this kind of sadness. God promises to make all things new. Jesus will wipe away the tears of our sadness, and they won’t come back. We will be with Jesus, and sadness will forever be gone.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Return to the weekend service by worshiping with the Ada Bible Worship Team as they sing “It Is Well.” The lyrics are a strong reminder to trust in God no matter what we go through. The lyrics also point to the day when everything will be made right, when “the Lord shall descend.”

JAMES 1:19–20
My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
