TODAY’S MESSAGE
The New Testament shares one story where Jesus participates in the Feast of the Tabernacles. Over time, the feast developed a water ritual. The ritual was tied to God’s provision of water from the rock in the wilderness, coupled with the very real need for the rain to begin anew during that time of year. The priests would draw water from a pool, carry it up to the temple and pour it into a bowl that drained onto an altar. It was a way to ask God for rain, which was life. It’s during the Feast of Tabernacles (maybe even during the water ritual) that Jesus claims to be the source of living water. He’s telling them he is the one they are asking for water.
Water is life in Israel. Jesus is life for us. Jesus offers us hope for a secure future. A future spent with him. We can have confidence our sins are forgiven when we accept his free gift of life. But there’s so much more. God created us to have life now. Jesus’s teachings show us how to find that life. It’s about developing the character of Jesus and learning to trust him. That’s real life. It’s a life no longer dependent on circumstances but built upon the foundation of God’s love. Jesus is life.
