TODAY’S MESSAGE
God gives Israel three national feasts. The feasts served as God-given rhythms to shape the people of Israel. As we’ve seen throughout this series, each feast had an agricultural and historical connection. The feasts tied the people and God to the present and the past. They served to remind the people of God’s active role in their daily provision, but also his role in the establishment and protection of them as a people. Layered throughout the instructions for the feasts is also an emphasis on community. God designs the feast to include those without community and those without resources.
Jesus fulfills each of the feasts. Jesus is God’s provision of life for those who believe in him. Jesus offers us the life we’re created to live. Jesus’s teaching continues God’s emphasis on community. He ushers in a new community, the church. Jesus-followers from all backgrounds gather as one family in the church. It’s to be a community that welcomes outsiders because Jesus-followers recognize they were outsiders and God welcomed them into his family. The feasts call us to develop rhythms in our own life to shape us toward gratitude and community.
IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY
Reflect on Jesus as the fulfillment of each feast. Thank him for dying for us on the cross and for defeating death through his resurrection.
