December 20 | Jesus as Prophet

December 20, 2022

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. Deuteronomy 18:18

Read: Deuteronomy 18:18-19
Listen:
Deuteronomy 18

TODAY’S MESSAGE

The most significant event in the history of Israel is the Exodus. God’s people are enslaved in Egypt for 400 years. God calls a prophet, Moses, to lead them out of slavery. God miraculously rescues the people and forges them into a nation. Yet, God tells Moses that there will be another prophet like Moses. A prophet who speaks the words of God with authority to be listened to. Jesus is this prophet Moses talked about (Acts 3:22).

A prophet speaks the words of God. Moses told the people there would be a prophet like him that they needed to listen to, and we need to listen to Jesus. Jesus not only speaks the word of God, but he is God. His words are the very words of God. The Old Testament prophets challenged their listeners to put the words of God into practice in a way that changed their lives. The prophets called on people to treat others fairly and to look out for the disadvantaged. Jesus built upon this message. He challenged his listeners to be not only hearers but doers. Jesus as prophet is a reminder that it isn’t enough to know or hear the word of God. We are called to live it out.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Reflect on Jesus as prophet. Consider whether you take Jesus’s words seriously enough to allow them to change the way you live and treat those around you. Think through your interactions with friends and family in the next few days and weeks. Ask God to help you treat those you interact with fairly and with the love of Jesus.
