TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group. John 8:3

Read: John 8:1-11
Listen: John 8

TODAY’S MESSAGE

This is a very delicate and broken situation. The Pharisees catch a woman in the act of adultery and throw her at Jesus to trap him. They want to expose him disobeying the law so they can discredit him and have him thrown in jail. But Jesus expertly navigates an impossible no-win scenario. Jesus saves the woman from death, accepts her and gives her simple yet life-changing instructions: “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

Throughout Encounters with Jesus we’ll take a close look at specific encounters Jesus has with those around him. When we see how a person responds and relates to others it helps us learn who they are and if we can trust them. The more we learn about Jesus, the more we’re taught about God the Father who sent him (John 7:29).

Jesus’s encounter with this woman might parallel difficult situations we face in our own lives. His response to her situation gives us hope that we don’t have to be defined by our mistakes and regrets. Jesus offers grace without judgment and an invitation to a whole new life.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Talk with God about how you view mistakes both in your own life and the lives of others. Ask him to help you bring the mistakes you’ve hidden into his light for restoration. Also, ask him to help you show grace without judgment to others when you see their mistakes.
