June 19 | The Centurion

June 19, 2023

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. Luke 7:1-3

Read: Luke 7:1-10
Listen: Luke 7

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Jesus wraps up some teachings and heads to his home base in Capernaum. As a crossroads, word travels fast in and out of Capernaum. Word of Jesus reached a Roman centurion whose servant was very sick. And this is where the story gets interesting. A centurion was a Roman military officer whose presence was not welcome to the Jews. But this centurion is unique. He cares about his servants, has good relationships with some Jewish elders and even helped build a synagogue. The soldier turns to Jesus in a crisis with remarkable trust and faith.

This week, we explore many things through this interaction between the centurion and Jesus. We will see God’s incredible grace. We’ll look at the holiness of Christ. We will consider how to trust in Jesus in difficult spaces and turn toward him in crisis. Through it all, may we learn to move closer to God as we consider this soldier’s faith.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Invite God to move in your heart this week and ask him to show you what you need to learn from the centurion, his remarkable faith and the response of Jesus. Finally, ask God for help as you respond to what you learn.
