TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!” Then Ruth told her mother-in-law about the one at whose place she had been working. “The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz,” she said. “The LORD bless him!” Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. “He has not stopped showing his kindness to the living and the dead.” She added, “That man is our close relative; he is one of our guardian-redeemers.” Ruth 2:19-20

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Boaz was a man of character, showing kindness to Naomi and Ruth. Naomi’s affirmation that Boaz showed “kindness to the living and the dead” was a testimony of Boaz’s integrity and heart of compassion. One sees this compassion demonstrated through his devotion to God’s words and his care for Naomi and Ruth. This story shows us two important points: (1) Boaz cared for Naomi and Ruth’s physical needs (2) and did so in a way to respect their personhood and dignity.

We can reflect on and imitate Boaz’s wisdom and compassion. Boaz cares for Naomi and Ruth; we all have daily opportunities to care for others. It might be assisting a family member going through a physical trial, a church member going through a work crisis, or a neighbor dealing with depression or anxiety. Opportunities look different, and wise help can look different still. Nevertheless, like Boaz, we can be people who meet physical needs and respect people’s dignity as we do.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Memorize Ruth 2:20. Use this verse as a reminder of what a life of compassion looks like in action. As you reflect on this verse, consider ways to show kindness and compassion to those around you.
