Beyond the Weekend

March 14 | The Oil Giver

March 14, 2024

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.” 2 Kings 4:7

Read: 2 Kings 4:3-7
Listen: 2 Kings 4

TODAY’S MESSAGE

The widow and her sons carefully follow the prophet Elisha’s instructions. They close their door and begin pouring the oil. The oil continues to flow and doesn’t run out until every last jar is full. Elisha then tells her to sell the oil and pay her debts. God miraculously fills her gap. God provides for her every need. However, it isn’t the oil she needs most but the oil giver.

God can be trusted. God’s trustworthiness is a theme woven through Scripture. Faith is trusting in God. We come to God with all our needs, but ultimately, our greatest need is God himself. The Psalms provide beautiful language for trusting God. He is our light, salvation and the stronghold of our lives. We need not fear with him by our side (Psalm 27:1). It is his face we seek (Psalm 27:8). God meets our most profound need by providing his Son Jesus to forgive our sins and restore our relationship with him. Through him, we have salvation and eternal life. God is worthy of our trust and faith in him.

TODAY: If you’ve never turned to God in faith, today is the day to do so. Admit your need for him and thank him for salvation through Jesus. Then, join the Ada Bible Worship Team as they sing “Same God.” Praise the same God who promised enduring love to Jacob, parted the waters for Moses, gave courage to David, and met Mary with his power. He is the same God we trust and follow today.

JESUS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

Read Zechariah 12-13. Highlight anything that points to Jesus. Note the shepherd imagery and any descriptions that sound like what happens to Jesus on the cross.
