January 18 | The Power of Hospitality

January 18, 2018

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16b

Read: Romans 12:9-21

Listen: Romans 12

TODAY’S MESSAGE

In Romans 12, Paul tells the church to put their love into action. He knows they will change the world if they do this. Paul had heard what Jesus said when he tells the people around him that they are the salt and light of the earth (see Matthew 5). Jesus says when the people around you see you doing good things (like going out of your way to meet a real need for someone you barely know), it should cause them to glorify God.

Rarely is someone argued into the believing Jesus is the Rescuer. Instead, they are loved. Their rescue stories are littered with someone showing them hospitality. Someone built them a fire when they washed up on the shores of someone’s life. The fire might have been a kind word, a shoulder to cry on, a new friend at just the right time, some financial help or someone investing in them at work.

Lives change when the incredible generosity God has shown us results in whole life generosity. This is the grace effect.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

God gave us the gift of his grace and we are asked to give back the gift of hospitality. If you are challenged this week by the importance of hospitality, consider serving on our hospitality team. These wonderful people show hospitality to people they don’t know on a regular basis by doing things like serving coffee and cookies, greeting people and answering questions at the NEXT STEPS area.
