TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Matthew 4:7

TODAY’S MESSAGE
The Israelites demanded that God live up to their expectations. In the wilderness between Egypt and the Promised Land, water wasn’t readily available. As they got thirstier and thirstier, they threw a hissy-fit and accused Moses (and God) of bringing them to the desert to die. They put God to the test by demanding water. He had better meet their demand or they’re done with him (Exodus 17:1-7).
Satan tempts Jesus to test God in a similar way. He takes him to the top of the highest building in Jerusalem. Satan tells Jesus to throw himself off to see if God will send angels to save him. If Jesus had done that, God’s plan to save the world through him would be ruined. Jesus trusts in God’s plan and tells the devil the same words God gives Moses to reprimand Israel, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”
Testing God is a form of rebellion that says, “If you give me what I demand, then I will trust you.” God will meet our needs—but it’s on his terms and not ours. Watch the video clip below as Pastor Jeff Manion describes how we test God.
IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY
Identify ways you make demands by testing God. Then ask for his forgiveness and help. Memorize these words from Moses, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test” (Matthew 4:7).
