Beyond the Weekend

November 12 | The Report

November 12, 2019

Join us as we focus each day for nine weeks on a different part of 1 Corinthians 13.
Tuesday: It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. 1 Corinthians 5:1

Read: 1 Corinthians 5:1

Listen: 1 Corinthians 5

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Paul doesn’t hesitate when he calls out the behavior of one man in today’s verses. This man was behaving immorally with his stepmother. His actions are against God’s design/plan for sexuality and causing pain and heartache to the church body and those involved.

It is fair for us to wonder—how did this happen? The man probably didn’t wake up one morning and say to himself, “I am going to wreck my life today. I am going to burn relationships and hurt those close to me.” Instead, he probably convinced himself that his plans, not God’s, were best for him. He probably told himself it was OK because this would make him happy.

If we are honest with ourselves, we don’t always follow God’s plan for our lives either. We, too, tell ourselves that the destructive decisions are no big deal because at least it will make us happy. In the end, we have to face the same question as the man in the passage, “Do we really trust God’s design?” God’s way doesn’t always bring instant gratification, but it will bring us life.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Turn to page 54 in your Culture of the Cross Journal. Draw a line down the middle of the page and write “My Plan” on one side and “God’s Plan” on the other. Spend time writing out areas where you struggle to trust God’s plan/design or areas where you deceive yourself into thinking your plan is better.
