Read: Mark 10:35-45

Listen: Mark 10

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Jesus used the proverbs in his teaching but also lived them. When some of the disciples engage in a misguided power grab, Jesus helps his disciples see the centrality of humility. He essentially tells them that down is up and up is down in his kingdom.

Jesus gives advice about life to his closest friends. He is trying to get them to see real life—true greatness—is tied to humility. Jesus, God-in-flesh, shows us he isn’t above being humble. He serves others by going so far as dying for us. That’s humility, and true greatness.

We have to value humility if we call ourselves Jesus-followers. James writes that God opposes the proud (James 4:7) Humility is central if we want to live the great life God designed us to live. It starts with saying, humbly before God, that there’s nothing we can do to earn his love or pay for our sin debt.

But that’s just the beginning. Being humble is being willing to receive advice, both from the Bible and wise people around us. We can’t be a great parent, friend, boss, child, spouse, representative of Jesus or co-worker if we don’t develop humility. James tells us, “Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will lift you up” (James 4:10).Being prideful will keep us from living a truly great life.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Reflect upon Jesus’ statement that if you want to be great—you have to be the servant of all. It is easy to focus on what people should be doing for us. Today focus on what you can do for others. Whether big or small, serve those around you today.
