TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“Will the Lord reject forever? Will he never show his favor again? Psalm 77:7

Read: Psalm 77:1-15
Listen:
Psalm 77

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Asaph, the author of Psalm 77, is in a very dark place. He’s a musician and spiritual leader during Israel’s fall and exile to Babylon. This psalm is a deeply felt lament expressing his feelings toward God of abandonment, depression and loneliness. Even as a spiritual leader, he’s experiencing a crisis of faith.

It’s likely all of us will find ourselves in that same place of emotional and spiritual despair at least a few times in our lives. Reading Asaph’s lament, we discover he moves from a dark place of anguish to a renewed hope. How he finds that hope is critically important to us and our walk of faith.

During this Honest to God series we are learning the importance of lament. Lament is necessary when our circumstances look impossible, we see evil and corruption around us and God seems far away. God in his mercy and wisdom invites us to tell him how we feel. Asaph does that and shows us how to navigate from a crisis of faith to hope.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Like Asaph, pray and tell God about any crisis of faith you are feeling right now, “Father God, I feel anxious, alone and stressed about _______. Please be near to me and others who may be brokenhearted by political divisions, racial injustice and loss due to COVID. I know you are a mighty God and my hope is in you and you alone. Amen.”
